Noise emanating from the railway can be partially mitigated by adding additional structures along the side of the railway. This can take several forms, from low targeted noise barriers that are placed close to the track at the height of the train’s wheels, to significantly higher fences (or baffles) that provide more general noise reduction.
While the larger baffles may eliminate more noise, they are visually far more intrusive. This is particularly true when placed on a viaduct, significantly increasing the side profile.
