Green Party The Green Party opposes the building of HS2 entirely, unlike Labour and the Conservatives. Local Greens have been active in opposing HS2 plans to build a long, high viaduct across Methley and Woodlesford. This proposal will completely change the local landscape and will destroy green space used for leisure activities in those communities. Also, the construction works for it will cause local residents considerable misery for several years.

Conservative Party Candidate If we are elected to represent our areas on Leeds City Council we will continue to work with our MP Alec Shelbrooke, who has, for nearly five years now, worked closely with our communities in order to represent the residents in objections to the initial proposed route by HS2 Ltd. Furthermore, our MP has committed to supporting residents throughout the pending petition stage whenever the Bill relating to Phase 2b comes before Parliament. If we are lucky enough to be elected as your local councillors in May then we will be supporting residents and our MP throughout that process.

Leeds City Council is run by a Labour administration that has a large majority of Councillors on the Council, including the incumbent Labour Councillors in Rothwell, Garforth & Swillington and Kippax and Methley. To date, the Council has provided little support to our areas since the initial HS2 route was announced, indeed it transpired that the Labour administration was working against our area, rather than with us, by lobbying for a HS2 station location that negatively affects our communities. On 3rd May, unless there is a change of leadership on the Council, we can’t promise to change the way Leeds City Council continues to ignore our communities, but we can promise to work tirelessly as local councillors to hold the Labour Council to account and to support the actions of our MP who has worked with the community for nearly five years in order to secure changes to the way HS2 arrives in Leeds.

Liberal Democrats The Leeds Liberal Democrats are the only local representatives that actually back up what we say with action on HS2. On Leeds City Council, both the Labour and Conservative Groups welcome HS2 to the city. Not one of their councillors, of either party, have ever voted against HS2 in the Council Chamber, and the Conservative MP has never voted against it in Parliament. All LibDem council candidates are residents directly affected by HS2 and all are committed to oppose it vocally and through our votes at Leeds Civic Hall to make sure the blight on our area is not ignored.

Labour Party Given this is the first investment in rail to the North of England for over a hundred years , we have always supported this long overdue improvement in connectivity to our other big cities like Sheffield , Derby and Birmingham ,all strong manufacturing centres and responsible for millions of jobs .. it has never been about speed to London : rather increased capacity to our other Northern cities .
However , as local councillors , we have always argued that Woodlesford should not be sacrificed at the expense of this economic benefit . Indeed we consistently responded to executive reports to Council and the H.S 2 company that urgent engineering changes to the route needed to be taken . At council we also supported a Labour White paper calling for this action. Regrettably , the new proposals of a tunnel protected some parts of Woodlesford from destroying the visual amenity but has given concern to a greater number of residents in relation to noise , ground security and other environmental issues . We will continue to support residents who live near the proposed route , which includes Methley along with Woodlesford and we will continue to lobby for much more generous compensation if we cannot change the route.
